Leaves have different voices
A dry leaf can crunch under your feet. A fresh leaf can rustle in the breeze. Can you hear both on a woodland walk?

Where the village paths turn leafy
There is always something to hear if you stop a moment.
Past the flowers and the old tree, a little path wanders into the Woods. Leaves shift, twigs tick, and a bird might call from somewhere you cannot quite see. No two walks seem to bring home quite the same story.
Follow the pathAn old tree leans beside the path. There is a bench tucked under its leaves and a mossy log on the other side. Which would you notice first?
Can you find the quiet bench beneath the old tree?

A leaf falls. Was that a footstep?
Wander a little fartherNear a stump, the smallest things have been left where they landed. A feather. A pebble. Something made the marks in the soft earth—but what?
Take your time. Feather, mushrooms, tracks, striped pebble and acorn caps are waiting to be noticed.

Look at the clearing, make a guess, then open each clue. Perhaps you will spot something we missed.
A pale feather rests on the mossy stump. We do not know which bird dropped it.
Two little mushrooms have popped up beside the stump. They are for looking at, not tasting.
Tiny tracks cross the soft earth. Which creature might have made them?
Near the edge of the path is a pebble with pale stripes.
Several acorn caps lie near the path. Their acorns may already be somewhere else.
You do not need to find anything. Choose a woodland sound, close your eyes if you like, and just listen.
The Woods are full of little things worth noticing. Here are three to look and listen for.
A dry leaf can crunch under your feet. A fresh leaf can rustle in the breeze. Can you hear both on a woodland walk?
Footprints can tell you that a creature passed by, even when the creature has already gone. Where do you think it went?
Hollows and little spaces in old trees can shelter woodland creatures. We can wonder who visits without putting our hands inside.
Someone could follow the tiny tracks. Someone else might come looking for a missing button. The Woods will still have their path, their leaves and their little surprises when the next visitor arrives.

The trees kept this little light safe for you.
Follow it back towards the village. Perhaps the Cottage door is open, or there is time for another look at the map.
