The Kitchen Table

Looking after you

You spend so much time looking after everyone else. This little corner is just for you. No advice on being perfect, just a few kind words and ideas for the days that feel heavy.

A cup of tea for you

Looking after little ones is big work, and some days feel wobbly for grown-ups too. Being tired, worried, cross or unsure doesn't mean you're getting it wrong. It means you care.

You don't have to have all the answers. Doing your best on an ordinary day is enough.

If you're finding things hard for a while, you don't have to manage alone.

🌧️ Wobbly days

Some days just don't go to plan. The toast is wrong, the shoes won't go on and everyone is cross by 8am, including you. It's OK not to enjoy every moment. A bad day doesn't make you a bad parent. It makes you a person. Tomorrow is a brand new day, and so is this afternoon.

💛 Good enough is enough

Screen time so you could get the laundry done. Fish sticks again. Missing the school assembly. It's easy to carry guilt about the little things, but children don't need a perfect grown-up. They need one who loves them and keeps trying. Good enough really is enough.

🌼 A little time for you

Time for yourself doesn't have to mean a spa day. It can be a hot cup of tea you actually drink while it's warm, five minutes in the garden, a favorite song in the car or an early night. Small moments add up, and you deserve them too. Even ten quiet minutes after bedtime counts. You don't have to earn a rest.

🤝 Asking for help

Asking for help isn't a sign you're not coping. It's a sign you're looking after yourself. A friend, family member or neighbor may be glad to help more than you think. Your doctor is there for you as well as your child. Many areas also have local family resource centers offering free support and groups for parents, and calling 211 can help you find one.
