There are no right answers - your child can write, draw, point, talk, or leave a box blank.

Ollie from Collyvale, whose story explores his first day at school

What is on the printable?

A first day can hold lots of feelings at once. This page gives children a few simple ways to show what they are thinking without turning the conversation into a test.

1

My school

A simple space for the child's name and the name of their school.

2

How I feel

Children can choose from feelings such as excited, happy, curious, wobbly, shy or “not sure yet”.

3

Looking forward & wondering

Two gentle prompts for something they hope for and something they would like to know.

4

Draw my first day

A large blank space for a picture, plus a final message for their grown-up.

How to use it

You can print the page before school as a way to begin a conversation, or complete it afterwards as a little first-day keepsake. Younger children do not need to write the answers themselves. A grown-up can write down their words, or the child can simply draw and talk.

Try not to correct the feeling they choose. A child can be excited and worried, or have no idea how they feel yet. All of those are useful answers.

Ollie has a first-day wobble too

Ollie is six and thinks big kids should not worry about school. His story can help start a conversation about brave faces, noisy classrooms and the feelings that sometimes sit underneath.
