Meet Pipin
Small steps make big friendships.
Pipin is a tiny woodland creature who loves watching, listening and noticing. Pipin wants to join in, but with new friends it can take a little while to find the right moment.
Pipin isn't unhappy and doesn't need to stop being quiet. Pipin's stories are about finding small, comfortable ways to take part — a wave, a hello, sitting nearby, or trying one little thing.
“You don't have to be loud to make a big difference.”

Pipin notices how other people are feeling and likes gentle, thoughtful company.
Before joining in, Pipin often watches for a little while and works out what is happening.
For Pipin, courage might be saying hello, moving a little closer or trying something new for just a moment.
Mushrooms, leaves, butterflies, smooth stones and peaceful woodland corners are some of Pipin's favorite things.
Pipin's place in Collyvale
When the others are playing, Pipin may first appear from behind a mushroom, tree or signpost. The other characters learn not to drag Pipin into the middle or demand a big performance. They leave a little space and make joining in easy.
Sometimes Pipin watches. Sometimes Pipin waves. Sometimes Pipin joins the adventure. All three are perfectly good places to begin.
Pipin's special role: helping children explore shyness, joining in, making friends and speaking up without suggesting that being quiet is something that needs fixing.
It's okay to look and listen before deciding whether you'd like to join in.
A smile, a wave or one small word can be enough for a first step.
You don't have to do everything. One small part of the game or activity is still joining in.
I'm here. I'm listening. I can try.
